Prevalence of Yellow Fever disease in Africa and South America - travel advisory to India

Yellow Fever is an acute viral hemorrhagic disease with the high mortality rate of 40 to 60 per cent transmitted by infected mosquitoes prevailing in tropical areas of South America and Africa. The disease is neither endemic to India nor have established transmission of the disease, however, due to India's conducive climate and presence of similar viruses such as dengue there is significant risk of importation.

2.       In this regard India has implemented stringent yellow fever vaccine entry requirements under the International Health Regulations (IHR) 2005. Under IHR travellers ≥ 9 months of age, arriving from any of the 42 Yellow Fever endemic countries (As per list at Annexure I) must possess a valid yellow Fever Vaccination Certificate issued by an authorized Yellow fever vaccination centers upon arrival. The certificate becomes valid 10 days after vaccination; therefore, travelers must be vaccinated at least 10 days before their departure. Travelers without possession of a valid certificate or with an immature certificate are quarantined for maximum period of 6 days at designated facilities as per IHR. Also, as per rules, there is no diplomatic immunity to these guidelines.

3.       Further, there are WHO requirements regarding the need for nationals from the Yellow Fever endemic countries (Annexure I) to possess a valid Yellow Fever Vaccination Certificate at least 10 days prior to the arrival in India.

4.       Cooperation in this matter is crucial for preventing the importation and potential transmission of Yellow Fever within Indian borders.
